Quick facts about birthright citizenship

Birthright Citizenship

1 out of 26
The US is 1 of only 36 countries that have a policy of automatic unconditional citizenship whereby anybody born in the country immediately receives citizenship.
225,000
Estimates put undocumented migrant births between 225,000 - 250,000 each year.
33,000
Between 33,000 - 36,000 births are estimated to occur annually because of the birth tourist industry.

The Supreme Court Case

Executive order
President Trump signed an executive order in January directing federal agencies not to recognize birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. if neither parent is a citizen or lawful permanent resident.
US allegiance
The government argues that citizens of a nation must owe that nation direct and immediate allegiance, something children of undocumented immigrants or temporary visitors do not do, since their primary allegiance is to their parents' home countries.
Parental citizenship requirements
Parental citizenship requirements are more common throughout the deeloped world. For example, the UK requires at least one parent is a citizen, or "legally settled", or the child lives in UK for 10 years.

Why This Matters

The Trump administration believes that birthright citizenship should not apply to the children of people temporarily or illegally in the country. Removing automatic birthright citizenship will allow the government to combat significant threats to national security and public safety.
